"I don't have the pictures back yet from the photographer (when I do I'll send a group shot) but I wanted you to see how perfect your material was for my wedding. The shot enclosed is of my brother walking me down the aisle in a shirt my mother made using the fabric you sent. The wedding was held at The Polynesian Resort at Walt Disney World, FL. Your service was wonderful, the wedding was a dream. Thank you!"

Fabric Covered Mail Box

Materials Needed:

Measure and Cut
Use tape measure to measure the length of your mailbox, and the width from bottom edge to bottom edge around the top. Cut fabric the measured size.

Apply Fabric
Hint: It is helpful to raise the mailbox off your working surface.

Following the directions for your spray adhesive or decoupage, apply the fabric carefully, working out air bubbles.  Directions for using your product will vary according to brand, but the basic directions follow.  Please be sure to follow the directions on the label of the product you are using.

Place the fabric over the mailbox and check the fit before you actually apply the fabric.  You will need to make a cut for the mailbox flag.  A straight razor would be useful to tuck in the edges around the flag.

Spray Adhesive: Some spray adhesives allow re-positioning, which could be helpful, but you still need to work faster with spray adhesive than if you are using decoupage.  A permanent bond is not needed since you will be sealing the fabric, but the fabric should be secure enough that it will not slide around when you are applying the sealant.

Spray one or both surfaces depending on your instructions.  Carefully apply fabric and work out all bubbles.  Remember to work quickly when using spray adhesive.  Tuck in the edges around the flag and check for bubbles or wrinkles.

Decoupage: Apply a coat of decoupage with the paintbrush.  Apply the fabric to the mailbox and smooth out any bubbles or wrinkles.  Apply several thin coats of decoupage, allowing it to dry between coats.  Allow to dry for 72 hours before placing outside if you decide not to apply a final sealant.   Mailbox can be used without a sealant, but will weather better if you add a coat of sealant.

Apply Sealant
There are several sealants you can use to seal your mailbox.  You can use clear varnish, surfboard resin, or even clear coat car paint.  If you are unsure which sealant to use, ask for help from someone in your local hardware store.  You want to choose a sealant that is designed not to yellow.

To seal, apply a layer of sealant over the fabric after it has dried.  Follow the specific instructions on the label of your product.  Be sure you have adequate ventilation and/or mask filters.

Put Mailbox Outside & Other Ideas
Once your mailbox is dry you can put it outside.  You can also decorate the front door with fabric or a cut-out of from your fabric.  You could even get crazy and put fabric on the mailbox post.  This method can also be used to cover boxes, doors, or clay pots, or?
