Sheer or Lace Bed Coverlet

Summer is the time to lighten up.  Give your bed a light and airy look for summer by adding a sheer or lace coverlet. This is a simple, light layer over your currrent bedspread.  You could also make two layers, one solid with a sheer or lace on top and change the color scheme for your bed for the season.  This light and airy layer is super quick and super easy.

Our example uses Barcelona lace in ivory over a cream bedspread.  We experimented with piles of different colored solids and sheers and lace.  The combinations we were able to come up with were a lot of fun.  We especially had fun with the tropical sheers and the Mirage sheers.  Tone on tone combinations, such as a blue sheer over blue solid were rather elegant.

Materials Needed

How Much Do You Need?

Measure the length of your bedspread.  Add two inches for hems to the length.   You may want to have your coverlet slightly longer than the bedspread, so you may want to add a little extra.  This is the length of fabric you will need.

If the fabric is not as wide as your bedspread, you will need more than one panel. For example, 60 inch wide lace will make a coverlet aproximately 116 to 118 inches wide. (120 inches minus seam allowances, and side hems allowances if needed).  If you need two panels for your coverlet, double the length of fabric you need so you have two panels the same length.

Piecing Together Two Panels

One panel will be your center panel.  Cut the length of the second panel for the sides in half.  If you need less width, cut excess width from the cut edge, not the finished edge of the lace or sheer.  Use the finished edges for the outside edges and the cut edges for the seams.

Pin and stitch one cut edge to each side of the center panel, right sides together.  If your fabric will fray, you should serge or finish the cut edge before stitching the seam.

Double fold hem the top and the bottom.  Hem the sides if the sides are not finished edges.

Trim excess threads and cover your bed for your new summery look.
