"I just ordered some great fabric to cover patio cushions for an antique rattan set from the 1940's and could not find anything I liked locally. Your site was a God send, and it will be such fun to be able to say the fabric is from Hawaii! (Now all I have to do is make 8 cushion covers!)"

Monthly Project for November, 2004

Easy Reversible Napkins

This month we are offering a fun and quick project, Easy Reversible Napkins. The best part is they are made quickly and easily with fat quarters. You can mix and match coordinating, complementary, or contrasting fabrics. Your new set of napkins can mix or match. It depends on your vision, creativity, and fabric available. For our example we have used two cute Christmas calicos, hol-069 and hol-107.

Why We Like This Project

These beautiful napkins have a rich, almost quilted feel, are fun to fold, and are super fast and super easy. Make them for your holiday spread, or for beautiful handmade gifts

Directions

TEMPLATE:
We recommend using a template for nice square napkins. You can make a template out of poster board. Measure and cut a perfectly square 18 inch template. For fat quarter napkins you want an 18" square template. Fat quarters are aproximately 18 inches on the narrowest side, so that is the largest square you can manage with a fat quarter If you are using other fabric and prefer a larger size, cut the template to a 20 inch or even 22 inch square. The important thing in creating a template is to have a nice square.
Hint-- We didn't have any poster board handy so we taped manilla folders together and then cut to size.

CUTTING:
Place template over flat, ironed fabric. Mark and cut along line. It is possible to cut more than one layer at a time.

SEWING:
Place two cut squares with right sides together and pin. You will sew all around the napkin, leaving an opening on one side, about three inches long.

Now turn the napkin right side out and press flat.
Hint--Start ironing from the center and work out in all directions on both sides. Press the seams last.

Using a top stitch or a decorative stitch, stitch all along the edges. Done!
