Novelty Pillowcase with Contrasting Trim
This is a great project for Teens. Pillowcases can spruce up a bedroom with little effort or money. Adding contrasting trim and cuff give a designer look.
Why We Like This Project
This is a quick and easy project, that can be created by Teen or beginners. Adding a contrasting trim to a simple pillowcase give a designer look for a fraction of the cost.
Materials Needed
- 3/4 yard fabric for the pillowcase
- 1/3 yard contrasting fabric for the cuff of pillowcase
- 1/8 yard different contrasting fabric for the accent
- Thread
Cutting
- Cut 3/4 yard piece into 27" by 41" piece. This is the main piece.
- Cut 1/3 yard piece into 10" by 41" piece. This is the cuff piece.
- Cut 1/8 yard piece into 3" by 41" piece. This is the accent piece.
Press
- 3" strip in half lengthwise so you have a 1-1/2" strip, 41" long
- 10" strip in half lengthwise so you have a 5" strip, 41" long
Assembly
- Pin folded accent strip to right side of main fabric.
- Unfold the cuff piece and pin along the same edge as the accent strip with right sides together. You will now have the cut edges of the three fabrics layered.
- Sew the layers all together with a 1/2" seam. Press seam allowance toward end piece.
- With right sides together sew the side, matching the accent and cuff pieces, and the bottom of the pillowcase with a 1/2" seam. Finish these seams with zigzag stitch or serger.
- Keeping pillowcase inside out, on the unfinished edge of the cuff piece fold under 3/8" and press. If you refold the cuff piece using the original fold, you should have 3/8" to turn under and 1/8" seam allowance. Pin to hold for top stitching, or stitch in the ditch.
- Turn pillowcase right side out.
- Sew cuff piece in place by top stitching or stitching in the ditch.
