"Dear GotFabric.com, I Just wanted to tell you how pleased I was with the fabric I received in my last order. I have been using it in my Quilting projects. I especially love the batik fabric. I just have one problem, but I don't think you can help me out. More snow is expected here on Wednesday! Thank you!"

Duvet Cover

  1. Measure your comforter

Measure the length and width of the comforter you wish to cover.
  2. Calculate the width

For a 5/8" seam allowance, add about 1-1/2" to the width you measured. This is the width of fabric you will need. For a thicker comforter, or looser fit, add a little more to the width.
  3. Calculate the length

Double the measurement of the length you measured, and then add enough for two hem allowances, and enough for the flap. Three inches is sufficient for the flap, although it can certainly be longer. Adding an extra 5" will allow enough for a 3" flap, and 1" for each hem. Unless you wish to adjust the hem allowance or the length of the flap, the length of fabric needed for your duvet will be the length of the comforter doubled plus 5 inches.
  4. Sew panels together to get width if needed

Stitch together panels down the entire length. Make sure the finished width is the same as you calculated. You can simply stitch together the panels, match the prints on the adjoining panels, add some decorative stitching etc. Be as creative or simple as you wish.
  5. Finish ends

Hem both ends of duvet cover.
  6. Create flap

On one end, the end that will be the bottom and fold over to be the flap, turn over the end, right sides together, for the length you have calculated your finished flap to be. Iron and/or baste. Stitch the side seams together. Turn right side out and press. Stitch along the edge of the flap to secure and finish the flap.
  7. Sew side seams

Placing right sides together, line up the finished hem with the bottom of the flap. Stitch together both side seams. Turn right side out and press.
  8. Buttons

Mark the placement of the buttons and button holes. Sew button holes and sew on buttons.
