The art of Kalamkari is India's ancient fabric artistry and is 3000 years old, originated in the southern part of India. The word Kalam means Pen and Kari means Work-Art. People who do this fine art are called kalamkars. The ancient art of Kalamkari is passed down within families from generation to generation. The 13th to 18th century Kalamkari fabric was known as a luxury item among Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The Portuguese called this delicate fine fabric decoration as Pintado, the Dutch called it Sitz, and the British referred to it as Chintz.

The irregularities in color and hand painted designs and any slight imperfections are due to the unique handicraft process, which is the beauty of Kalamkari. It is produced using vegetable dyes, block stamp, and a pen made up from bamboo or date palm branch, pointed at the end with a bunch of fine hairs or cotton to brush on the color. Each Kalamkar creates his own vegetable dyes from tree bark, leaves, flowers, fruits, and roots. During this natural process the cloth is block stamped, then painted by hand and the process goes five to six times until richness is developed. The fabric is washed and dried five times to achieve desired results. Kalamkars also use mordant solution of natural minerals such as iron or alum to fix the dye onto the material. Each dye lot are different due to the unique process. The irregularities of hand painted designs are due to unique handicraft.
